In the old part of Stephens City the houses stand at the front edge of their lots and their gutters reach out over the sidewalk, so the gutters, siding, and roof of a Main Street house are in plain view of everyone walking by.

Gutters that hang over the sidewalk

Stephens City was chartered in 1758 as Stephensburg, and its old core is the Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District, added to the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1991 and the National Register in 1992. According to the National Register nomination, the district reaches from the buildings facing Main Street one block east and west, about 65 acres holding 147 contributing buildings and sites.

The nomination explains the streetscape too. Early residents built at the very front edge of their lots and kept the land behind for gardens and livestock, so the houses sit with hardly any setback. Among the features that set the district apart, it names tree-lined streets and “unusual gutters that extend overhead from the houses, over the sidewalk.”

On those houses, anyone on the sidewalk passes right under the gutter, so its outside face is the part the street sees. We wash that face, clean out whatever has collected inside, and clear each downspout, on houses of two stories or three.

Porches, cornices, and siding along Main Street

Some of the oldest houses here are 18th-century log dwellings, and the district inventory lists several as log covered in weatherboard, so the face you see from the street is wood siding, not logs. Most of the late-19th-century houses are two-story frame I-houses, and many older ones, log houses among them, were updated in that era with a one-story Folk Victorian front porch. A few carry bracketed cornices under the eaves. Brick houses stand among them, along with frame houses that now wear vinyl or aluminum siding, and the nomination notes very little new construction or demolition on Main Street since 1941.

Painted wood, log, brick, vinyl, aluminum: we wash every one of them. Above the porch roofs and cornices, we soft wash the main roof itself, metal, asphalt shingle, or cedar shake alike, and moss and lichen come off it as well.

The town code has the Historic Preservation Commission judge every proposal by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. Standard 7 forbids damaging treatments such as sandblasting and says surface cleaning, where it's appropriate, must use “the gentlest means possible.” The Town's 2025 district brochure treats minor repairs, painting, and re-roofing as routine upkeep, while changing a siding or roofing material goes to the Commission for review. Owners with questions are asked to contact Town staff, who decide whether a project needs a Certificate of Appropriateness.

Basement stairwells, landings, and the patio out back

Away from the sidewalk, basement stairwells and their landings are on our list as well; we wash just about anything outdoors that can be washed. A surface cleaner does the driveway, the patio, and any pavers.
