Mildew and rust stains on the inspection list
One Ashburn homeowners' association's resale inspection list names the common maintenance issues it notes after a complete and thorough inspection of a home's exterior, and the findings go into the resale packet the buyer receives. Two of them read “Excessive mildew, mold, or grime on any exterior structure i.e., walkouts, decks, siding, fences, etc.” and fences that are beyond “weathered naturally.” The owner is notified and given a compliance period to take care of it.

In 1990, 3,393 people lived in the area the Census counts as Ashburn. By 2020 there were 46,349, in 17,906 housing units, and Route 28 marks the community's eastern edge. Loudoun's General Plan says neighborhoods in the western part of the county's suburbs were built in the early 1990s or later, and that parks, greenways, and open space frame the master-planned developments west of Route 28.
The change came in the 1980s and 1990s, as the Dulles Technology Corridor grew and large neighborhoods were built. The plan describes those developments as a variety of housing types organized around neighborhood centers. On a street that went up in a few years, the siding, the decks, and the fences are all about the same age.
